The chimp safari involves an en route rhino tracking adventure at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, chimpanzee trekking and nature walks in Budongo Central Forest Reserve. Budongo is one of the several chimpanzee trekking places that Uganda has today. This chimp tour offers an amazing chimps and nature walk experience in Murchison Falls National Park. Visiting chimpanzees in Uganda, one needs a chimpanzee trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

This 2 Day safari will take you to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s biggest safari park in the North western side of the country covering an area of 3,840 square kilometres and was gazetted as a game reserve in 1926. However, this time you wont do a game drive or a boat cruise in the park but you would only stop in Budongo forest for activities. Budongo forest, one of the chimpanzee trekking sites in Uganda is part of the larger Murchison falls conservation area which also has Karuma Wildlife Rerserve.

Full Trip Itinerary 

Day 1: Travel to Budongo Forest, visit Ziwa Rhinos En Route

After breakfast in Kampala or Entebbe, our driver will pick you up from your hotel to start the trip at 7:00 am after a short briefing about the 2 days chimp safari to Budongo forest. You will drive out of Kampala taking the northern direction through Luwero district. Almost halfway the journey, you will make a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino trekking during which you will spot the the black and white rhinos found on the 7000 hectare sanctuary.

Rhino tracking comes along with seeing birds and mammal species on the ranch which is a double reward. After tracking the endangered rhinos, proceed to Masindi town where you will stop for lunch. After a delicious meal, continue to the park where you will enter after like an hour’s ride from Masindi town. Budongo forest is the first you will find after entering the vast Murchison Falls National Park.

On arrival at the forest, you will use the evening remaining hours for a mesmerising nature walk in Budongo. During this walk, expect to see a variety of huge tree species, insects and birds plus monkeys. The thick jungle is known for the plenty mahogany trees that have mature over decades and centuries. After a nature tour, retire to the lodge for dinner and overnight at Budongo Eco Lodge on full board.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Central Forest Reserve

Have breakfast in the morning and then transfer to the park offices for briefing about the adventure rules and regulations. During the walk to see the chimps, expect to view other primate species like monkeys, birds as well as plants including large trees which are amazing. After a chimpanzee tour, you will return to the lodge for lunch following commencing a departure journey back to Kampala where you will arrive in the evening.
