Kabaka’s Lake, a Man Made Lake in Kampala Uganda

Kabaka’s lake is the largest man-made lake in Uganda, located in Mengo near the Kabaka’s Palace. The lake is about 5 kilometers from Kampala capital city centre. Kabaka’s Lake was an initiative of King Danieri Basammula-Ekkere Mwanga II Mukasa, the 31st Kabaka of Buganda who ruled from 1884 until 1888 and from 1889 until 1897. One of the reasons for this man made lake was to create an escape route through Lake Victoria in case he faced danger from land. The plan was, the lake would connect to Lake Victoria through Munyonyo area, a Kampala suburb.

The Size of the Lake

Kabaka’s Lake covers an area of approximately 2 square kilometers with a depth of about 200 feet. The lake, one of the tourist attractions in Kampala and among historical places in Uganda as well is believed to be Africa’s excavated lake. During the digging of the lake, all the 52 tribes of Buganda cooperated and worked together for its setup.

Location

The lake in is found Ndeba in Lubaga division in Kampala is a lake with stagnant waters and among the greatest treasures of Uganda though it remains under-utilized and largely unexplored. The lake is between Ring Road and Nabunya Road.
