Gorilla Families in Buhoma – Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura Gorilla Group
There are 5 habituated gorilla families in Buhoma sector, one of the regions that make up Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi forest is the home to mountain gorillas in Uganda and Buhoma is found in the north of the park. The gorilla families in Buhoma are Mubare gorilla group, Habinyanja family and Rushegura group. The 3 families in Buhoma are among over 20 gorilla groups in Uganda, with the rest found in other regions of the park.
Buhoma region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is where gorilla trekking safaris started from. In 1993, the first group of tourists went to Buhoma for the launching gorilla trekking in the forest. At that time, there was only one habituated gorilla group in Bwindi but as years elapsed, more gorilla families were created and habituated for conservation and tourism purpose. Gorilla tourism has generated money that is helping in protecting the endangered primates in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.
The three groups are not far from each other as well as not distant from Buhoma park head offices. Gorilla families in Buhoma are loved by many travelers for trekking since the area is easily accessible from Queen Elizabeth National Park with all its numerous attractions as well as from Kampala. In case one is doing a chimpanzee safari in Kibale Forest, a safari in Lake Mburo or wildlife tour in Queen Elizabeth Park, transferring to Buhoma is shorter than any region in Bwindi.
