Mishaya Gorilla Family in Rushaga Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Mishaya Gorilla Family is one of the gorilla trekking groups in Rushaga sector, south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Rushaga area is one of the four gorilla trekking sectors of Bwindi forest. Other include Nkuringo sector also in the south of Bwindi, Ruhija sector in the east of the gorilla park and Buhoma sector in the north of the impenetrable forest.

The group name is derived from Mishaya, a silverback in Bwindi Impenetrable forest who quit Nshongi group with a few females to make his own family unit. He got a few females from other groups in the region to make a total of 12 gorilla members together with three young ones. Mishaya, the only one male adult in the family is said to be a serious fighter who makes connections with other groups in the area.

Mishaya gorilla family Members include Bakunzi and Mwiza, all adult females, Rutaro and Mize, juveniles, Mwiza, Bakunzi plus other infants. Mishaya, the group founder died in 2014 and another male took over leadership of the family. Like other gorilla groups, Mishaya group numbers keep on changing as new members join, others leave, deaths cases plus new births.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the home to almost half the number of mountain gorillas in the world. Mishaya as well as other groups in Bwindi forest have been habituated to create ease for gorilla tourism prosper well.
