Muyambi Gorilla Family, a Gorilla Trekking Group in Buhoma Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Muyambi gorilla family is a gorilla family found in Buhoma Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The group was added to the gorilla families in Buhoma in 2019. Muyambi gorilla group was once part of Mubare gorilla family which was the first gorilla unit to be trekked in Bwindi forest. Muyambi was created in 2019 after splitting from Mubare gorilla family and gorilla trekking was first done in the same year. The family has got 7 members with Muyambi being the leading silverback.

Muyambi family the newest group in Buhoma region since 2019. Mountain gorillas of this group are interesting to see as they live their daily life of communicating, eating, resting and moving on the ground and also in the trees. The family welcomed a new born in May 2020.

Access to Buhoma Sector for Gorilla Trekking

By road from Kampala or Entebbe International Airport to Buhoma sector, it is about 9 hours drive including en-route stops for lunch, handicraft makers in Mpambire or Uganda Equator in Mpigi. The main road network from Entebbe or Kampala to Buhoma sector is summarized as follow; Kampala – Masaka – Mbarara – Rukungiri and finally to Buhoma area.

By air; there are flights daily from Entebbe Airport and Kajjansi Airfield to Kihihi Airstrip. Most of the travelers in these flights are gorilla tourists. Fron Entebbe or Kampala are all combined gorilla trekking in Uganda from Entebbe and Kampala.On the other hand, gorilla trekking in Uganda from Kigali is not a viable route alternative when considering seeing gorillas in Buhoma. Reason is Buhoma area is far compared to gorilla trekking sectors in the south of Bwindi forest.
