Nyasimbi Hot Springs

Nyasimbi Hot Springs

Nyasimbi Hot Springs, also known as the female hot spring, is a prominent geothermal feature located within Semuliki National Park in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and the Sempaya Hot Springs, which include both the male (Bintente) and female (Nyasimbi) springs.

Geothermal Features:

  • Nyasimbi (Female Hot Spring): This spring is characterized by a geyser that erupts boiling water up to 2 meters high. The water temperature reaches approximately 100°C, allowing visitors to boil eggs and bananas in the spring.
  • Bintente (Male Hot Spring): In contrast, the male hot spring is a large pool of hot water, measuring about 12 meters in diameter. While it doesn’t feature a geyser, it remains a significant attraction within the park.

Cultural Significance:

The names of the hot springs are deeply rooted in local folklore. According to the Bamaga clan’s legend, the male spring is named Bintente after a man who disappeared in the forest, and the female spring is named Nyasimbi, meaning “female ancestors,” after his wife who also vanished. The community believes that their male ancestors reside in the male spring and their female ancestors in the female spring.

Visiting the Hot Springs:

Visitors to Semuliki National Park can embark on guided walks to explore the hot springs. The park offers various activities, including birding, cultural encounters, hiking, and nature walks. The hot springs are accessible via a 30-minute walk from the park’s main entrance.

Safety Considerations:

While the hot springs are a fascinating attraction, it’s important to exercise caution due to the high temperatures. Visitors should adhere to safety guidelines provided by park authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
