Tororo Rock

Tororo Rock in Tororo Town of Eastern Uganda

Tororo RockTororo Rock is a rock formation positioned in the town of Tororo in Eastern Uganda. The rock serves as the defining feature of the town. The physical feature standing tall in the region is also a tourist attraction being climbable in about one hour. The climb involves four ladders up the last sections and the walk does not require any skills. It is among the tourist attractions in eastern Uganda and almost the only one in the area, a commercial town that connects to Busia and Malaba border posts.

It is widely reported that the rock is seen from any part of Tororo and the nearby districts. There is saying in Tororo: “The Eiffel Tower is to Paris as the magnificent rock is to Tororo District”. And the saying is true as per the the rock’s magnificence.

The Rock Elevation

The highest altitude of the rock is 4,865 feet (1,483 metres) with a gradient of about 0.75 from the east to the west. On the rock’s slopes are various rock paintings and ancestral caves. The elevation of Tororo Town averages 4,189 feet (1,277 metres) and the rock towers 676 feet (206 m) above the downtown Tororo.

The rock was formed by volcanic activity in the earth’s crust about 250 million years ago. The physical feature has many ancient caves with amazing paintings from thousands of years go.

The place is a tourist errand town, famous for a massive rock formation and also distinguished for its churches, historical houses that belonged to tea plantation owners and Hindu temples. Tororo is geographically located between 00°41′34″ N latitude and 34°10′54″ E longitude and at an estimated elevation of 1,180 meters.
